How to Take Smart Notes
#note #organization
Successful writing comes from good note taking
“Getting something that is already written into another written piece is incomparably easier than assembling everything in your mind and then trying to retrieve it from there.”
You need the Habit of note taking to write well
“Having a meaningful and well-defined task beats willpower every time.”
“Routines require simple, repeatable tasks that can become automatic and fit together seamlessly”
the new routine will feel artificial at first, much like an habit change
This method is similar to Getting Things Done
- fleeting notes: capture everything that come up in your mind
- literature notes: notes about something that you read
- permanent notes: bring notes from 1/2 and add more metadata, links them, improve them.
You invert the process of writing. You first read a lot of content that you are interested in.
Then when you have many content about some ideas/concepts, you can organized the pieces and write about it
you need serendipity to find new ideas
In which context do you want to find this note?
“Making something public always means to write it down so it can be read.”
Go in public to gather feedback of your thoughts/ideas
An expert acts on intuition because all the rules and knowledge are internalized. They don’t need conscious to act properly.
An expert can see patterns that begineers can’t
Things we understand are connected, it is easier to remember interconnected things, like the slip-box
